Description
A long walk through the Amsterdamse Bos (forest of Amsterdam) on a sunny Easter weekend.
This landscaped forest and recreation area was largely constructed during the 1930s, partly as a way to provide work for the many unemployed people in Amsterdam during the crisis years. It combines wooded areas, open grasslands, lakes and waterways, and many walking, cycling, and horse riding paths. It was designed to be a place for relaxation as well as being active. Construction work continued throughout and after the second world war, and was completed in 1970.
Although this forest area is mostly located within the current municipality of Amstelveen, which borders the southern part of Amsterdam, its design and construction were commissioned by the city council of Amsterdam. It is therefore called the “Amsterdamse Bos”.
