Whim of the Week – 58

Snails do it too!

One thing that is fascinating about land snails, or terrestrial gastropod mollusks, is that most of them are hermaphrodites. In other words, they have both male and female reproductive organs, and can produce both eggs and spermatozoa. They even get involved in true “courtship” before mating.

On a nice walk through the sand dunes along the Dutch cost last weekend, I came across two snails involved in an intimate embrace.

Several years ago, on a hike in the mountains in Switzerland, I took an even better shot of two snails “doing it”, in something that resembles a 69 position 😉

Must be quite awkward, trying to make love with a big and heavy shell on your back…

whimsical (adj.): Determined by chance or impulse or whim rather than by necessity or reason. Playful or fanciful, especially in a humorous way. (Source: The Free Dictionary)

In an effort to continue looking at the bright side of life in these worrying times, the Whim of the Week series features sometimes funny or unusual, sometimes beautiful or inspiring, but generally whimsical observations I happen to capture on camera during my wanderings around the world.
