Whim of the Week – 40

Animal anecdotes: The albino squirrel.

When I lived in Cape Town (South Africa) for a while, I had an apartment close to the Company’s Garden, a downtown city park. So I would often go for a stroll through this park, which has many squirrels running around in search of leftover bits of food. Oddly enough, there was one albino squirrel that I noticed regularly. It even had the typical red eyes. Never really seen anything like it!

When hiking in the Swiss Alps there is always a good chance to run into domestic cows, goats, or sheep. But on one hike I did a couple of years ago, near Zinal in the canton of Valais, I ran into these hip characters somewhere high up in the mountains. Never seen this type of sheep anywhere else in the Alps…

Finally, a view from my apartment window in Vienna, Austria. One cold winter evening I noticed these pigeons huddling together on a rooftop antenna, trying to catch some of the warm air coming out of a nearby chimney. With that thin moon sliver right next to it, I just thought it created a nice image.

whimsical (adj.): Determined by chance or impulse or whim rather than by necessity or reason. Playful or fanciful, especially in a humorous way. (Source: The Free Dictionary)

In an effort to continue looking at the bright side of life in these worrying times, the Whim of the Week series features sometimes funny or unusual, sometimes beautiful or inspiring, but generally whimsical observations I happen to capture on camera during my wanderings around the world.
