Spent several hours wandering around in Thessaloniki, Greece, where I am to attend the conference on complex systems. It's very much an industrial (port) city, but hidden in between the modern apartment and commercial buildings are some remnants of the past.
The famous white tower.
A view along the waterfront. The harbor is in the distance (left).
A statue of Alexander the Great looking out over the Mediterranean.
The Acheiropiitos, a Greek orthodox church in the middle of a residential block.
The Roman forum, in stark contrast with the modern-day apartment buildings.
Another Greek orthodox church, the Agios Dimitrios. There was actually a wedding going on inside, so I sat down and watched it for a little while...
And a small one, in a pretty little garden, the Panagia Chalkeon.
Aristotle Square (Plateia Aristotelous).
And finally, the view from my hotel room balcony, in the morning...
...and at night.
