Science

Being trained as a computer scientist, already as an undergraduate student I became very interested in the interface between computation and biology. Not only in applying techniques and models from computer science to study biology, but also in using ideas from biology to improve our computing methods.

Much of my research as a graduate student was on genetic algorithms, fitness landscapes, cellular automata, and emergent computation. Later on I moved into Bioinformatics, in particular working on improving computational methods in phylogenetics. More recently, I have been working on autocatalytic sets in the context of the origin of life.

Most of my research work has been published in rather technical scientific articles. However, I am also very interested in popular science writing, some of which appears on this blog as well.
