Berlin, Germany

26 January 2017

Some urban hiking in central Berlin, after a two-day workshop at the Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin. First from Checkpoint Charlie along part of the Berliner Mauerweg to the East Side Gallery. Then with the S-bahn to the Brandenburger Tor, and a walk through the Tiergarten to the Siegessäule and back.

Starting at Checkpoint Charlie...

Then along the Berliner Mauerweg, a route along where the wall once stood. In some of the streets, a cobblestone line indicates its former location.

Two views of part of the East Side Gallery, the longest section (1.3km) of the wall that is still standing.

My favorite part of the East Side Gallery. A real shame that "The Wall" on the wall is so badly vandalized...

These Trabants parked along the wall are for rent!

Then with the S-bahn to the Brandenburger Tor.

And the Reichstag (home of the German Parliament) next to it.

And the nearby memorial to the murdered Jews of Europe.

Then a walk through the Tiergarten park.

To the Siegessäule.

With 285 steps up to the top.

But with a nice view, looking back towards the Brandenburger Tor.
