Leukerbad, Valais, Switzerland

24-26 September 2013

The first week of autumn brought beautiful weather, and I decided to go to Leukerbad (Valais) for three days to do some hiking there.

On the first day I started walking from the village along the Dala river and up into the valley to the Flüekapelle (located towards the end of the valley).

Amazingly there were still a few places with snow from last winter, and that below 2000m!

Don't ask me why, but for some reason the crickets really liked my smelly socks...

On the way back down, nice views of the Gemmi pass and the Wildstrubel glacier, the area I would be going to the next day.

Day two, another beautiful day. The first sunlight on the steep mountain face just above the village.

I took the cable car up to the Gemmi pass, and from there started walking towards the Lämmerenhütte. A view across the Lämmerenboden (old glacier bed) towards the Wildstrubel glacier.

A beautiful reflection in the Lämmerensee.

Near the hut, another magnificent reflection: the Lämmeren glacier.

From the hut up into the Lämmeren valley to the Rote Totz pass. This part is marked as an alpine route, which means hardly anybody else on the trail ;-)

I almost had to turn around though, as there was already quite some (fresh!) snow on the pass (2806m) and on the other side on the way down. But luckily there were already some good footsteps in the snow, which made it easier to get all the way down along the Tälli glacier.

Then up a little bit again to get to another pass with a nice view of the Daubensee and back towards the Gemmi pass (around the corner to the right).

A steep trail down, but with more stunning views of vertical rock walls...

...and more peaks with fresh snow, just on the other side of the Daubensee.

Finally, back to the Gemmi pass, with a spectacular view of the southern part of the Alps. And then the cable car back down to the village.

Day three was (despite a better forecast) rather cloudy and even a bit rainy. So I decided to take a well-deserved soak in one the thermal baths Leukerbad is famous for. That afternoon, on the way back to the bus station, a last (panorama) shot of the sheer rock face behind the village during one of those rare moments that the sun peeped through.

A wonderful three days in a mountain paradise...
